INTRODUCTION.
The method I use came from an Australian book by a nursing sister whose name escapes me as I lent the book to someone many, many years ago and it never came back! But the good news is, I know it well enough to tell you. When I first read the book, I was warned by the friend who gave it to me that I would find it hard to believe that it was so easy to manage the attacks, and I did find it hard to believe it ... at first. I had suffered from them on and off for many years (although I didn't have a name for them then) and they had got worse following a breakdown of my health. But I followed the method, and... it worked! In fact, over the many years since, I have had the opportunity to teach the method personally to many people. I discovered that four out of five of all those I have taught it to, have had no problems since. That is to say, that the attacks may begin, but they managed to stop them dead in their tracks. I have also shared this technique with many others on the internet. Others heard about it from friends and have emailed me and requested it. Some of those I've shared it with have even reported that they have had NO MORE panic attacks!
THE METHOD.
Most people have suffered the attacks for a while, sometimes many years. The first thing I strongly suggest is to go to your doctor and get a complete checkup, heart, blood pressure etc. Armed with the positive results that most people get from such a checkup, you can then go into battle.
1. WHEN THE ATTACK STARTS.
It feels like your heart is racing to terrible speeds and that something awful is going to happen. Perhaps you feel that you are going to have a heart attack. Now, having been to the doctor's, you KNOW that your heart is in good condition. You know that there is nothing wrong with your heart or your blood pressure. Why then is this happening to you? Let me tell you: it is an ILLUSION, a simple chemical reaction. Adrenaline is being pumped around your system and it is giving you the ILLUSION that your heart is about to burst.. I CAN ASSURE YOU JUST AS YOUR DOCTOR HAS ASSURED YOU,THAT YOU ARE NOT IN DANGER. You are okay. Remember that. Your doctor has ALREADY said so, and you know so. Cling to that thought. TAKE YOUR PULSE. You will find, to your surprise, that it is not going very fast, even though it may have felt like it. But when you measure it, SURPRISE! It is not going very fast at all! That is because the whole attack is an illusion, a trick of the body on you. It is just adrenaline, the chemical that gives you the strength to run from danger. You are okay. Keep repeating that OUT LOUD: "I am all right. This is just a chemical reaction. My doctor has checked me out and I am in good health. There is nothing wrong with my heart. My pulse is not racing. This is an illusion. I am all right."
2. CLOSE YOUR EYES & SPEAK OUT THE TRUTH.
Imagine the attack to be in front of you. Your instincts tell you to run from it, but this time you will not run. You will face it. You will look it straight in the eye and keep repeating: "I am all right. This is just an illusion etc.... " You will begin to notice that the attack is no longer a thing to be feared. It has lost its hold on you because it was holding you by fear, and you are no longer afraid of it.
3.BEGIN TO FLY AWAY FROM IT.
Now that you have FOCUSED on the attack, and seen that its teeth have been pulled, BEGIN TO FLY AWAY FROM IT. It is no longer important to you. It fades to the background. Tell yourself so, out loud: "Is that all it was? It was such a little thing, and yet it kept a hold on me by fear for so long. I am not afraid of it any more. I can see it has no hold on me."
4. KEEP TALKING TO YOURSELF!
Tell yourself: "This attack will pass in a few minutes." And it will. It is inevitable that even the worst attack only lasts a few minutes. It ends. And now that you have conquered it, it will end even quicker. Within days, when you have mastered the method, it will not even start. You will fend it off even before it gets a hold. You will feel so proud of yourself! You faced the enemy and beat it, by exposing it for what it was: A FRAUD! A cruel illusion that kept you as its slave for so long. But now you are FREE!
5. USE DISTRACTION.
If the attack seems to go on too long during this early time that you are learning to use this method, then DISTRACTION is the key. Phone a friend. Go for a drive. Pray to God. Do the washing. Go outside in the garden and pull out weeds. Anything that will distract you. It actually works!
A LITTLE ABOUT MYSELF.
I am NOT a doctor NOR a medical specialist and I make no such claims. (As I have said, it is important to get those medical opinions FIRST to rule out any other medical reasons.)
