READING FROM THE WORD OF GOD Then some of the Pharisees and teachers of the law said to him, "Teacher, we want to see a miraculous sign from you." He answered, "A wicked and adulterous generation asks for a miraculous sign! But none will be given it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. The men of Nineveh will stand up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and now one greater than Jonah is here. The Queen of the South will rise at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for she came from the ends of the earth to listen to Solomon's wisdom, and now one greater than Solomon is here. Matthew 12:38-42 (NIV) We hear it every day: "If I could just see God, then I would believe." Sad, but even sadder are those who claim to believe who still will not listen to Jesus. This is what happened in the passage above. The religious leaders wanted a sign. Seems reasonable enough until we consider that JUST before, Jesus had healed a blind and deaf demon-possessed man before their eyes. How much more proof did they need? The evil pagans of Nineveh had repented at the words of Jonah; the idol- worshipping Queen of Sheba had left her land and travelled a long distance to hear the words of Solomon. Yet those who should have known better scoffed and refused to believe. How did Jesus react to their unbelief? He pointed them to the Scriptures. In them is all the proof we need, in order to believe in Jesus. TESTIMONY "My mother was twenty-five, beautiful, loving, caring and dead. She had been shot to death by a man in a fit of rage. During my early school years, I tried to kill myself twelve different times. But the hand of God was upon. My brothers went on to get into trouble, but God called me to preach when I was only sixteen. He turned that tragedy into a triumph in my life. I went on to high school and college and am now happily married and successful in ministry. It is only because of God's grace that I am here today to tell this and God's grace will lead me on." She appears to have a congenital bowel deformity, that may require surgery. Pray for the family, which is under immense strain. ***Keep Brett L in your prayers as he recovers from brain surgery following the accident last week. ***Pray for those who will be feeling the absence of loved ones this Easter: Chris L, Sue, Doreen F and for those who have family members going through health problems. SOME MORE HANDY HINTS FROM ROSE T (where does she get them from? The aluminium foil round the celery works fantastically!) 1. Place a slice of apple in hardened brown sugar to soften it. 2. When boiling corn on the cob, add a pinch of sugar to help bring out the corn's natural sweetness. 3. To determine whether an egg is fresh, immerse it in a pan of cool, salted water. If it sinks, it is fresh, but if it rises to the surface,throw it away. 4. Cure for headaches: Take a lime, cut it in half and rub it on your forehead. The throbbing will go away. 5. If you have a problem opening jars: Try using latex dishwashing gloves. They give a non-slip grip that makes opening jars easy. 6. Potatoes will take food stains off your fingers. Just slice and rub raw potato on the stains and rinse with water. 7. To get rid of itch from mosquito bites, try applying soap on the area and you will experience instant relief. 8. Ants, ants, ants everywhere ... Well, they are said to never cross a chalk line. So get your chalk out and draw a line on the floor or wherever ants tend to march. See for yourself. 9. Use air-freshener to clean mirrors. It does a good job and better still, leaves a lovely smell to the shine. 10. When you get a splinter, reach for the scotch tape before resorting to tweezers or a needle. Simply put the scotch tape over the splinter,then pull it off. Scotch tape removes most splinters painlessly and easily. 11. Now look what you can do with Alka Seltzer. Clean a toilet. Drop in two Alka Seltzer tablets, wait twenty minutes, brush and flush. The citric acid and effervescent action clean vitreous china. 12. Clean a vase. To remove a stain from the bottom of a glass vase or cruet, fill with water and drop in two Alka Seltzer tablets. 13. Polish jewelry. Drop two Alka Seltzer tablets into a glass of water and immerse the jewelry for two minutes. 14. Clean a thermos bottle. Fill the bottle with water, drop in four Alka Seltzer tablets, and let soak for an hour (or longer if necessary). 15. Unclog a drain. Clear the sink drain by dropping three Alka Seltzer tablets down the drain followed by a cup of white vinegar -Wait a few minutes, then run the hot water. ============================= Well, that's enough inspiration for the week.
