READING FROM THE WORD OF GOD "Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen: to loose the chains of injustice and untie the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free and break every yoke? Is it not to share your food with the hungry and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter-- when you see the naked, to clothe him, and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood? Then your light will break forth like the dawn, and your healing will quickly appear; then your righteousness will go before you, and the glory of the LORD will be your rear guard. Isaiah 58:6-8 (NIV) Have you ever seen a horse being pulled along by a cart? It sounds absurd, doesn't it? Yet much of the world's population firmly believes it can earn God's pleasure by ritual acts and good works. This passage puts the horse back in front of the cart: God is appealing to those who already responded to His call, who already have a relationship with Him, to show the colour of their money. If God has been good to us, then it should be a natural response to do good to others, especially those who have no one else to fight for them. Start small: help one person. Then two. Just start. TESTIMONY ""In Germany they first came for the Communists and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Communist. Then they came for the Jews, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Jew. Then they came for the trade unionists, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a trade unionist. Then they came for the Catholics, and I didn't speak up because I was a Protestant. Then they came for me - and by that time no one was left to speak up." - Pastor Martin Niemoller. (MARTIN NIEMOLLER was a Protestant pastor and head of the anti-Nazi Confessing Church. Arrested for "malicious attacks against the state", he spent seven years in Dachau and Sachsenhausen. Released in 1945 by the Allies, he helped issue the "Stuttgart Confession" which acknowledged that the clergy had not done enough in the struggle against the Nazis.) HAHAHA CORNER ***It was mealtime during our trip on a small airline in the Northwest. "Would you like dinner?" the flight attendant asked the man seated in front of me. "What are my choices?" he asked. "Yes or no," she replied. --Anon. ***Three preachers sat discussing the best positions for prayer while a telephone repairman worked nearby. "Kneeling is definitely best," claimed one. "No," another contended. "I get the best results standing with my hands outstretched to Heaven." "You're both wrong," the third insisted. "The most effective prayer position is lying prostrate, face down on the floor." The phone repairman could contain himself no longer. "Hey men," he interrupted, "the best prayin' I ever did was hangin' upside down from a telephone pole." --Anon. ***CORPORATE ROWING A Japanese company and an American company decided to have a canoe race on the Missouri river. Both teams practiced long and hard to reach their peak performance before the race.On the big day the Japanese won by a mile.Afterwards, the American team became very discouraged and morally depressed. The American management decided that the reason for the crushing defeat had to be found. A "Measurement Team," made up of senior management was formed. Their conclusion was that the Japanese had 8 people rowing and 1 person steering, while the Americans had 1 person rowing and 8 people steering. So American management hired a consulting company and paid them incredible amounts of money. They advised that too many people were steering the boat and not enough people were rowing. To prevent losing to the Japanese again next year, the rowing team's management structure was totally reorganized to 4 steering supervisors, 3 area steering superintendents and 1 assistant superintendent steering manager. They also implemented a new performance system that would give the 1 person rowing the boat greater incentive to work harder. It was called the "Rowing Team Quality First Program," with meetings, dinners and free pens for the rower: "We must give the rower empowerment and enrichments through this quality program." The next year the Japanese won by 2 miles. Humiliated, the American management laid off the rower for poor performance, halted development of a new canoe, sold the paddles, and canceled all capital investments for new equipment. Then they gave a High Performance Award to the steering managers and distributed the money saved as bonuses to the senior executives. --submitted by Paul D ***What do you get when you cross a Pit Bull and a Collie?
