First hot, then cold. Some of you have even reported snow (no chance of that in Sydney!) Here it has been raining for days. The only good thing we can report is that our mango tree has obviously come to believe it is in the rainforest, and has produced two mangoes, which are beginning to ripen! READING FROM THE WORD OF GOD By the time Lord reached Zoar, the sun had risen over the land. Then the Lord rained down burning sulfur on Sodom and Gomorroah-from the Lord out of the heavens. Thus he overthrew those cities and the entire plain, including all those living in the cities-and also the vegetation in the land. But Lot's wife looked back, and she became a pillar of salt. Genesis 19:23-26 (NIV) The sins of the cities of the plains are obvious. No one fails to see why they were destroyed. But why did Lot's wife have to die? If we look at the narratives preceeding today's story, we see that Lot and his family had a more subtle problem. Originally, Lot had chosen to live on the fertile plains of the Jordan, following a territorial dispute with Uncle Abraham, but very soon we find Lot and "the missus" living INSIDE the city of Sodom. Gradually, they began to adapt to the cultural norms of the city. Now don't get me wrong. Lot was probably a nice guy, and I'm sure "Mrs Lot" was a sweet lady. She probably handed scones across the back fence and never said a word of criticism! But she was compromised spiritually and "Mrs Lot" was the worst affected, sad to say. So much so, that even when the Lord was in the middle of saving her from destruction, she "looked back". She longed for the things that were passing away, instead of things eternal. Instead of being the salt of the earth for the lost souls of Sodom and Gomorrah, she became a pillar of salt, a reminder for all times that we must be "in this world and not of it." TESTIMONY "Was I good enough? How could I be sure? How do you know when good enough is good enough? One Friday night I visited with my university professor. He was a Christian. He began challenging me with the Bible. John 14:6 troubled me the most. Jesus was saying that He is the only way to Heaven. I never realized that and just had to know more. Well, over the next three months \I learned more. I learned that nobody is good enough (Romans 3:23). I learned that God sent Jesus to die for me so that I could be good enough. I learned that if I trusted Jesus He would make me good enough. I also learned that if I trusted Jesus, I would never be condemned (Romans 8:1).I trusted Jesus. He made me good enough, and now I'm sharing His love with others." (Matthew 28:19,20). Many of you have been into the website and looked at the pictures of the orphanage Sue and I help out with in Bali, Indonesia. (http://www.webpastor.com/miss&supp.htm) God willing, we hope to be back there soon and are making preparations to go. We will be taking presents for the kids and their carers, as well as things for pastors we meet. Sue has been collecting sample offers on the net, and asking companies if they can spare some basic school needs, personal needs etc. The response has been very good. We would like to thank all you generous people! GoPromos for 400 pens and for brother Vince R.,who accepted delivery of them in the US and posted them on to Sue. Also, Tonia S,Angela L, Cindy W, Kimberly K and daughter Courtney, Jennifer(Mommy569) and Cheryl Moore from Planet Rx. All these thoughtful people have offered help. Then there are the wonderful brothers and sisters from our church CoGS (you know who you are!) who have already donated pens, pencils, soaps, toys, etc. The orphanage has already received several deliveries this year, and they are very grateful for everything we have been able to get to them. "I love my daughter, and now I welcome you into the family," said the man. "To show you how much we care for you, I'm making you a 50-50 partner in my business. All you have to do is go to the factory every day and learn the operations." The son-in-law interrupted, "I hate factories. I can't stand the noise." "I see," replied the father-in-law. "Well then you'll work in the office and take charge of some of the operations." "I hate office work," said the son-on-law. "I can't stand being stuck behind a desk all day." "Wait a minute," said the father-in-law. "I just made you half-owner of a moneymaking organization, but you don't like factories and won't work in a office. What am I going to do with you?" "Easy," said the young man. "Buy me out." --Anon. **MODERN "OFF THE WALL" LEARNING (Hehehe!) CALIFORNIA STATE MATHEMATICS EXAMINATION 2000 (1)Zelda and Jane were given a Rottweiler at their commitment ceremony. If their dog needs to be walked two miles a day and they walk at a rate of one mile per hour, how much time will they spend discussing their relationship in public? (2)Michael has two abusive stepfathers and an alcoholic mother. If his self-esteem is reduced by 20% per dysfunctional parent, but Michael feels 3% better for every person he denigrates, how long will it take before he's ready to go home if 1 person walks by the cafe every 2 minutes? (3)Sanjeev has 7 piercings. If the likelihood of getting cellulitis on a given day is 10% per piercing, what is the likelihood Sanjeev will need to renew his erythromycin prescription during the next week? (4)The City and County of San Francisco decide to destroy 50 rats infesting downtown. If 9,800 animal rights activists hold a candlelight vigil, how many people did each dead rat "empower"? (5)George weighs 245 pounds and drinks two triple "lattes" every morning. If each shot of espresso contains 490mg of caffeine, what is George's average caffeine density in mg/pound? (6)There are 4500 homes in Mill Valley and all of them recycle plastic. If each household recycles 10 soda bottles a day and buys one polar fleece pullover per month, does Mill Valley have a monthly plastic surplus or deficit? Bonus question: Assuming all the plastic bottles are 1 liter size, how much Evian are they drinking? --An Anonymous Californian. **~~ FOR SAFETY'S SAKE ~~ Do NOT ride in automobiles: they cause 20% of all fatal accidents. Do NOT stay home: 17% of all accidents do occur in home. Do NOT walk on the streets or sidewalks: 14% of all accidents happen to pedestrians. Do NOT travel by air, rail, or water: 16% of all accidents happen on these. HOWEVER...Only .001% of all deaths occur in worship services in church, and almost all of these are related to previous physical disorders. Hence, the safest place for you to be at any time is church. Bible study is safe, too. The percentage there is even less. So... go to church! IT COULD SAVE YOUR LIFE! --submitted by Pat Croisant. PRAYER POINTS **Thank God for constantly reminding us of how much we need saving! **Thank God for the Bible, his normal way of speaking to us. Pray that the Holy Spirit will teach those around us his truth. **Patti writes:" My kidneys are yet better. I have gone and not sure you know what this means, but from a 3.0 creat to a 2.0 now down to 1.8. The Lord is working. His time... His way.... I am better. Not 100% yet. But I do feel I am on my way. I feel I have been given a second chance. I thank you for ALL the prayers and ask to please keep them up until I AM at that 100%....Love in Christ" **Pat C writes: "After going back for Bill's checkup after the removal of the cancer in the bladder and to see results of tests, here is what is before us...it was cancer of the bladder in the middle stage...had not gone into the bladder wall but could very well come back...will do another cysto in 3 months to see...now to the prostate and the hard place found on it and the very humongus size of it...we will go in for a biopsy on it as soon as the three weeks are up from which he couldn't do any work after the removal of the cancers, which will be the 4th.. he said this could very well be cancer also, but we are claiming God's healing in this also... please continue to remember us...I am so weary and tired from all I've been through plus staying by Bill's side through all of his troubles...thank you so much for your prayers and God bless! Remember I love you!" **Keep praying for those pregnant ladies. Violet will be first off the mark early May. **Bill is looking much better, although there has been a lot of damage to his heart.
